Política de identidad
El movimiento artístico de la política de la identidad cobró importancia entre las décadas de 1960 y 1980. Siguió a una serie de movimientos políticos pioneros relacionados con la diversidad y la representación visual de la identidad personal. A medida que surgían tensiones por la marginación de ciertos grupos sociopolíticos y culturales en Estados Unidos y en toda Europa, el arte se convirtió rápidamente en un vehículo de emancipación social y empoderamiento.
Galvanizada por el Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles de los Negros en EE.UU. en la década de 1960, la política de la identidad hace referencia a una serie de artistas y exposiciones que pretendían honrar las experiencias de grupos históricamente oprimidos. Los integrantes de este movimiento revolucionaron la representación de la identidad personal en el arte, protestaron vehementemente contra la discriminación de determinadas razas, géneros y sexualidades, e inauguraron una nueva era de arte festivo, diversamente representativo y, a menudo, profundamente subversivo.
Entre los abanderados del movimiento político identitario se encontraban Robert Mapplethorpe, Lorna Simpson, Judy Chicago, Martha Rosler y Félix González-Torres. La proliferación de la política de la identidad fue radical y generalizada: los artistas celebraron los espacios queer, cuestionaron los prejuicios raciales e impulsaron la segunda ola de esfuerzos feministas.
