STREET ART

Born in the 70s on the New York subway, street art came full force in Europe in the 80s, even if graffiti already existed in France and Germany since the 60s. Traditionally, the artistic movement corresponds to artwork created in the street, which explains why we associate it to something temporary. However, today street art is considered more broadly and includes artworks on all mediums.

With support from art galleries, mass popularity on Internet and social media, legitimacy through auction houses and entering the biggest museums, urban art is now commonly recognized as one of the art movements of the 21st century. Accepted if not encouraged and commissioned by cities, street art appears on more and more walls and transforms them into giant paintings made with the spray cans, paintbrushes and stencils of the greatest street artists.

Whereas in the beginning it only referred to tags, meaning signatures, its artistic vocabulary grows with every new pictural shape and color, composing artworks that are increasingly complex and technical. The goal of this art is to remind people that it is neither museums nor galleries that define art but the artists themselves that create it. Long considered illegal by the authorities and especially transportation companies, it is celebrated by the public and young artists, who see it as the ultimate symbol of freedom of expression. This conflict is at the basis of the political aspect that is associated to urban art. This is not applicable to all street artists even though big names of the scene, such as Banksy, do pertain to that view.

Because certain works of street art moved from the walls of our streets to that of our museums thanks to certain artists working on canvas, Artsper is able to propose a selection of major urban art scene artists.
