La Libre Sécession
Entre 1898 et 1919, des changements rapides et radicaux se produisent sur la scène artistique allemande. De l'impressionnisme à l'expressionnisme, du cubisme, du futurisme à la Nouvelle Objectivité et au constructivisme : Berlin a connu de nombreux mouvements, de la Sécession berlinoise au Groupe de novembre. En 1898, la Sécession berlinoise a été fondée en opposition à la politique culturelle établie et dépassée de l'Empire allemand. Elle représentait les mouvements artistiques modernes, notamment l'impressionnisme. Mais dès 1910, un autre groupe de jeunes artistes défie l'art de l'impressionnisme : la Nouvelle Sécession, un groupe d'expressionnistes, est fondée. Et quatre ans plus tard, les divergences d'opinion au sein de la Sécession berlinoise s'affrontent à nouveau : c'est là que la Libre Sécession est créée.
La Libre Sécession, ou en allemand « Freie Secession », était une association d'artistes modernes de Berlin organisant des expositions communes entre 1914 et 1923. Le mouvement fut créé après que 42 membres aient quitté, à la fin 1913, la Sécession berlinoise - qui a ainsi perdu la majorité de ses membres et presque tous ses artistes les plus éminents. Le désastre de la Première Guerre mondiale accélère le développement de l'art. En 1918, le Groupe de novembre est fondé et se concentre sur les aspects politiques de l'art. Max Liebermann, ancien cofondateur et dirigeant de la Sécession berlinoise, est nommé président honoraire de la Sécession libre. Parmi les autres membres notables, on y retrouve Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Theo von Brockhusen et Charles Crodel.
