Réalisme social
Le réalisme social dans les arts visuels se focalise sur la représentation de la société de mettre en évidence les problèmes et les injustices qui y règnent. Le réalisme social critique souvent la pauvreté, l'inégalité, la corruption et d'autres problèmes sociaux. Il se distingue du mouvement de réalisme socialiste du milieu du 20ème siècle, créé par Joseph Staline, qui visait à idéaliser la vie en Union soviétique à travers l'art.
Le mouvement artistique du réalisme social a pris de l'importance en Amérique pendant la Grande Dépression qui a eu lieu entre 1929 et 1939. Il était composé de toutes formes d'artistes : peintres, dessinateurs, poètes ou encore cinéastes. Il s'est développé en même temps que le régionalisme américain, un mouvement artistique qui visait à dépeindre la vie rurale américaine. Les membres du réalisme social ont critiqué la société et la politique américaines tout au long des années 1930, utilisant l'art comme une forme d'activisme. Parmi ces artistes figuraient les muralistes mexicains Diego Rivera et José Clemente Orozco, ainsi que de nombreux autres artistes de gauche à travers l'Amérique.
