Ville
La ville fascine, effraie, angoisse, attire. La ville provoque tout et son contraire. C'est pourquoi elle est un lieu privilégié pour les artistes en recherche d'inspiration, ou tout simplement pour ceux qui ne la connaissent pas. Elle s'inscrit de manière prédominante dans l'histoire de l'art car le lien entre l'art et la ville est bien plus étroit que ce qu'on pourrait penser. Si l'art existait avant l'apparition de ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui ville, il s'est fortement développé et accède à son apogée avec celle-ci. La ville, elle, est le centre fondateur et créateur d'artistes en herbe. Tout d'abord par l'apparition de musées d'art, de galeries, de manifestations artistiques (le Salon de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts créé à la fin du XVIIe siècle et se tenant à Paris). La ville grouille d'artistes en devenir, et on assiste à un véritable exode rural des artistes.
Cette dernière inspire autant car elle est d'abord porteuse d'espoir. Le jeune artiste méconnu du grand public se munit de ses pinceaux, de son appareil photo, de toute sa magie artistique et part saisir la reconnaissance qui habitent ses maîtres. Peintres, sculpteurs, écrivains, photographes, acteurs, s'y mélangent et se côtoient, créant ainsi une effervescence artistique riche, inspirante et innovante.
Certains artistes consacrent toute leur oeuvre à la ville. Edward Hopper notamment, atteindra l'apothéose de son art lorsqu'il se concentrera sur les ambiances et styles de vie propres au citadin américain. Son expansion est telle que d'autres problématiques apparaissent : est-ce la ville dans l'art ou l'art dans la ville ? La ville comme support ou comme lieu d'art ? Elle fascine le regard sensible du créateur car une ville ne s'arrête jamais de bouger, son mouvement est infini et inatteignable, mais il est aussi le reflet des changements de la société, des évolutions des générations et des moeurs. La ville est donc pour l'artiste le champs d'une création démultipliée, se nourrissant de ces inspirations mais aussi de l'énergie qu'il peut en puiser.
L'art contemporain saisit la ville comme support et comme lieu. Aujourd'hui les oeuvres artistiques se développent dans toutes les villes, les sculptures se donnent en spectacle à chaque coin de rue. Même si la ville peut aussi être un facteur d'angoisse par la foule, le capharnaüm et les embouteillages elle reste toujours un motif inspirant pour les artistes.
Enfin, un art proprement consacré et créé pour et par la ville est apparu au XXe siècle : le street art (l'art urbain). Celui-ci rassemble les différentes thématiques de la ville et de l'art : il n'existe que par elle. De nombreux artistes tels que Banksy ont donné un autre sens à la ville que l'on croyait connaître.
