Gilles Durfort began his career with fine-art photography in the 80s. His first series entitled “photographic structures" was shown at the Castelli Gallery in New York. On his return to Paris, he turned his attention to the study of glass and steel, working with the Bobé studio. This led to the creation of his first sculptures. The recipient of several awards, he worked with the art broker Donald Laborie and from 2012, steel became a form of “intimate expression" for him, a rebirth of his imagination.
Martine Monteau, Doctor of Art History, explains his work: “Gilles Durfort adopts a process of elimination. He removes the anecdote, eliminates detail, abandons relief, simplifies. His formula starts with the fundamental, and without falling into abstraction, he preserves a profile, a head, a silhouette to express a quest for the intimate, the existential. His heads evoke Miro, his figures are those of shadow puppetry. The internal and external, before and after, matter and emotion come together, fall in love and fight. To be born and give birth, to know and reveal, exalting a sense of Otherness.”
