Dopazo & Calderon

Visual artists, of Spanish origin, these two artists have established themselves on the international contemporary art market with an extraordinary style. “A travel diary from an unknown land” is how Mersuka Dopazo and Teresa Calderón define their work.

Creating in total autarky, they fashion canvases with four hands where paper and fabrics intermingle in naive compositions. Each element of the canvas is subjected to a quest for the object which gives the works a spiritual dimension. Densely modeled, the tissue papers and drawings are juxtaposed, between the pigments and the white areas of the canvas, always following the same gestural line. Several contrasts are revealed in the compositions where rhythm and order are opposed to curved and spontaneous forms.

Indeed, the reflection on the full and empty spaces and the sharp regularity with the freedom of a graphic design as much in the patterns as the colors allow to explore a harmony and a balance between the unexpected and the partitioned. Adepts of large formats, Mersuka Dopazo and Teresa Calderón offer us a work rich in delicacy where the play of materials reigns supreme. Homeless People, Couples, Travels People, Animals are so many series that dot a dense course where the imagination, fueled by encounters, populates their compositions.

Their undeniable talent was exhibited for the first time at the prestigious “Art on Paper” art fair during Armory Week in New York. This exhibition was called “Jardín de Papel”. Their work has also been presented at numerous fairs in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Singapore, but also in Hong Kong and throughout Europe.
