Art and Interior Design in Conversation: Artsper Meets Frenchy Fancy

For over a decade, Frenchy Fancy has been a go-to blog for interior design lovers and trend seekers. Behind this inspiring platform is Céline Lavigne, a Bordeaux-based interior designer with a passion for aesthetics, materials, and the subtle power of light. Launched in 2012 alongside her professional activity, Frenchy Fancy is much more than a blog — it's a reflection of Céline's unique eye and expertise. Through her articles, she shares design inspiration, practical advice, and insights from her own decoration projects. Her approach is thoughtful and refined, with a love for contrast, texture, and the unexpected detail that makes all the difference. In this exclusive interview, Artsper speaks with Céline about her creative journey, her inspirations, and the role of art in contemporary interiors. A rich dialogue between two complementary worlds: art and design.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your background? How did your passion for interior design develop, and what inspired you to launch your blog Frenchy Fancy back in 2012?
I grew up in a creative household—my mother is an artist, and she passed on her love for all things beautiful. Our home was always filled with things to touch, admire, and combine: books, vintage finds, unique materials… a sensory world that sparked my imagination. My path was a little unconventional. I started out studying literature at university, then completed a BTS in Real Estate. That's when I realized it wasn't property I was passionate about—it was interior design. The only class that truly captivated me was “Building Techniques"! So I decided to pursue a three-year design course, where I studied art history, decorative painting, drawing, and material techniques. Those were some of the best years of my life. A few months before graduating, my boyfriend (now husband) suggested I start a blog to share everything that was inspiring me during my studies. At the time, I didn't see the point—but today, that blog is an integral part of my career as a designer.
2. How would you describe your signature style as a designer? Are there specific principles or elements you always try to include in your projects?
I wouldn't say I have a strict “signature," but I do place a lot of importance on timelessness. I choose materials and shapes that will remain relevant for years to come—far from fleeting trends. I love to add contrasting details to bring personality to a space. And above all, functionality always comes first. Aesthetics are important, of course, but a space must work well for those who live in it, even if finding that balance can be a challenge.

3. What does your typical process look like when starting a new interior project? How do you balance creativity and functionality?
Everything starts with deep conversations with my clients. I need to truly understand the people who will live in the space—their habits, desires, limitations. That foundation shapes the entire project and deeply influences my approach. Then comes a thorough analysis of the existing space: light, flow, volumes, and architecture. That's when the first ideas begin to take shape. For me, a beautiful interior is meaningless if it isn't comfortable to live in day-to-day. I pay close attention to materials, shapes, and the fluidity of the layout.
Creativity comes into play in the details: an unexpected color, a vintage piece, a cleverly placed light, or a striking pattern. From there, I create visual moodboards—mixing colors, textures, and references—to validate the direction we're heading in. It's a collaborative process. I often feel like I'm illustrating my clients' wishes. In most cases, I work with detailed moodboards—they're rich and help my clients really visualize the project.
4. Your blog is a cherished source of inspiration and advice. How has sharing your work and ideas online influenced your career?
Initially, the blog was like a personal journal during my studies—a space to share my inspirations, discoveries, and ideas. I never imagined it would have such an impact! Over time, it became a true showcase and a way to connect with a loyal, curious, and engaged community. It's helped me make my work known, receive project inquiries, and attract the attention of brands and partners I now collaborate with. Sharing online also pushes me to stay fresh—to keep experimenting, learning, and exploring. Most importantly, it's given me the freedom to shape my career in a way that truly suits me.
5. How do you see the connection between art and interior design in a living space?
Art is an essential part of interior design. A thoughtful selection of artworks can completely transform a room. It brings personality and depth, and often reflects something intimate about the people who live there.
6. How can a platform like Artsper support interior designers like yourself in sourcing unique pieces and expanding their network?
Beyond being a great source of inspiration, Artsper is a goldmine for interior designers. It offers access to meaningful, original artworks—often a major challenge when designing a space. It's also an amazing tool to discover new talents or connect with galleries and artists we might never have found otherwise. For clients, it's a guarantee that they'll own something truly personal—far from mass-produced objects. As a designer, it's exactly the kind of resource that fuels my creativity and elevates my projects.
7. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in interior design today?
Be endlessly curious. Keep an open mind. Sometimes, we come across something that feels strange at first glance—but if you take the time to look deeper, you'll uncover a unique form of beauty. Don't be too quick to label things as simply “beautiful" or “not beautiful." Instead, learn to spot beauty where it's not immediately obvious.
8. What does the future hold for Frenchy Fancy? Are there any exciting projects or new directions you're considering?
Frenchy Fancy was born over a decade ago—I never imagined it would still resonate with so many people today. I hope it continues to grow and evolve in the years to come. One idea I'm toying with is inviting passionate contributors to join the platform, to enrich its content even more. But it's a hard decision to make, because it still feels like my very first “baby." I've also been thinking about writing a book, especially since my appearance in Intérieurs de blogueurs déco in 2022. Or maybe designing a line of home accessories or furniture in collaboration with a brand. Who knows what the future will bring? Right now, I'm also immersed in a big personal project—building our home. I'm documenting each step of the journey, and it's become a real playground for experimentation. So yes, ideas are always flowing—with the same goal: to share, to inspire, and to keep creating!
