Biography
Nazar Symotiuk (born 1992) is a Ukrainian sculptor based in Lviv whose work explores how color, repetition and physical depth shape perception. Working primarily with wood, he creates wall reliefs and freestanding sculptures that connect geometric precision with the changing experience of looking.
His signature reliefs bring together numerous individually positioned elements. Their arrangement establishes rhythms across the surface, while color, projecting forms and the spaces between them respond to light and viewpoint. From a distance, the compositions resolve into expansive patterns; closer inspection reveals their intricate construction and tactile character.
Drawing on his interests in Op Art, Pointillism and Impressionism, Symotiuk develops a sculptural language in which color helps organize space. Across different series, he considers perception, memory, disruption and the relationship between order and instability. The viewer’s movement becomes part of the encounter, revealing connections that remain hidden from a fixed position.
Symotiuk graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 2016 and master’s degree in 2018. He is a senior lecturer at the Academy and a doctoral candidate researching Ukrainian interpretations of Op Art.
His international exhibition history includes the Ukrainian Pavilion at NordArt 2021 in Germany and presentations at Mees-Van De Wiele Galerie in Ghent. In 2025, his work featured in the exhibition project Ratio at Mercury Art Center in Lviv. His works are held in private collections across Europe, Japan and the United States.
