Description
In a small, picturesque village, there lived a middle-aged woman who sold traditional herbal drinks, known as jamu. Every morning, before the sun greeted the earth, she was already busy in her kitchen, preparing various kinds of jamu. With skillful hands, she carefully mixed turmeric, ginger, temulawak, and other spices with great precision. For her, jamu was not just a herbal drink but a legacy from her ancestors that needed to be preserved. Draped in batik cloth and with a shawl over her shoulder, she carried bottles of jamu in a woven basket that always accompanied her. She walked along the village roads, offering her jamu to loyal customers. "Healthy jamu, fresh jamu!" she called out in a warm voice. Her customers welcomed her with warm smiles. There was Dwi, who always bought beras kencur jamu to maintain his stamina, Bu Rini, who loved kunyit asam to keep her body fit, and Mbak Lestari, who regularly drank bitter jamu to stay healthy. Every sip of jamu brought warmth and well-being to their bodies. The perseverance of this jamu seller taught many in the village the importance of preserving traditions and never giving up in the face of challenges. Over time, her jamu became more well-known, and even young people started to take an interest in drinking it. Behind her simplicity, the jamu seller was a strong woman, safeguarding cultural heritage and bringing health to many. With her warm smile, she kept moving forward, carrying warmth in every sip of her jamu.
This vibrant artwork showcases a scene rich in cultural storytelling and communal warmth. Depicted are several figures clothed in vivid, intricately patterned garments, gathered in an outdoor setting. Their expressions and gestures suggest engaging conversation and shared purpose, reflecting unity and camaraderie. In the center, a collection of bottles and a basket filled with green produce hint at a marketplace or a communal gathering, highlighting themes of trade and cooperation. The background reveals traditional houses and stylized foliage, rendered in bold colors and patterns, enhancing the narrative depth and cultural context. The artist's use of intricate designs and bright hues creates a dynamic tapestry, drawing viewers into a world where community bonds and cultural heritage are celebrated. This piece is a stunning amalgamation of tradition and artistry, inviting reflection on the richness of collective experiences.
Presentation
Kusbudiyanto, a contemporary Indonesian artist, was born in 1969 and lives in Yogyakarta, a city at the heart of artistic creation in Indonesia. From an early age, he developed a passion for depicting rural life, which he began to illustrate through drawing and painting. Before devoting himself fully to his artistic career, he worked in the craft design sector, which refined his sensitivity to materials, textures and cultural symbolism.
Since 2016, Kusbudiyanto has devoted himself exclusively to canvas painting, developing a colorful, pattern-rich figurative style inspired by traditional Javanese culture. His works evoke celebrations such as Satu Suro, symbolic elements such as keris or wayang kulit, and everyday scenes involving humans and animals. Through his compositions, he pays homage to the myths, rituals, and folk tales of the Indonesian archipelago, particularly those of Java.
His style is often described as tropical, both for its vibrant palette and the abundance of plant, floral, and animal motifs. He uses acrylic and mixed media on canvas, constructing detailed scenes where traditions, spirituality, and community life intersect. Children, markets, the forest, and local wildlife are all recurring subjects that reflect a narrative and humanist approach to creation.
Since 2017, Kusbudiyanto has exhibited regularly in Indonesia and internationally, including in Yogyakarta, Singapore, and other Southeast Asian art centers. His work is collected by contemporary Indonesian art enthusiasts who appreciate the cultural richness of his visual narratives.
