Description
This bold work is a captivating example of modern expressionism. It is distinguished by its vivid colors and broad, intense brushstrokes. Green, yellow, red, and blue tones collide in a vibrant dance, creating a dynamic tension throughout the painting. Abstract forms suggest faces or human figures, evoking raw and profound emotions. The contrast between dark and light hues intensifies the viewer's gaze. The use of black to outline the elements adds dramatic depth to the work. This painting is not merely aesthetically pleasing; it tells an emotional visual story and compels reflection on the human soul and its complexities. The simple, elegant black frame only accentuates the expressive power of the composition.
Presentation
Bengt Lindström (1925-2008) is a Swedish artist, painter, engraver, and sculptor, considered one of the major figures of Nordic expressionism and 20th-century Scandinavian contemporary painting. Born on September 3, 1925, in Storsjö Kapell, in Jämtland in Sweden, he grew up in the heart of the landscapes of northern Scandinavia, an environment that continuously nourishes his imagination. After artistic studies in Stockholm, he pursued his training in Copenhagen, Chicago, and then Paris, where he notably frequented the studios of André Lhote, Fernand Léger, and Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. These experiences enrich his plastic language while strengthening his attachment to an instinctive and expressive painting.
Bengt Lindström's work is immediately recognizable by its vibrant colors, generous impasto, and powerful figures inspired by Nordic mythology, Scandinavian legends, and Sami folklore. Working mainly with oil, acrylic, gouache, engraving, lithography, and monumental sculpture, he develops a pictorial writing of great intensity, where deformed faces, fantastic creatures, and mythological characters express a raw energy. His use of material, applied in thick layers, gives his compositions an almost sculptural dimension which is one of the signatures of his work.
Influenced by Expressionism, the CoBrA movement, the first arts, and Nordic folk traditions, Bengt Lindström advocates for an instinctive, free painting deeply rooted in Scandinavian culture. His work explores themes of nature, primitive forces, spirituality, memory, and founding myths. Without officially belonging to the CoBrA group, he maintains ties with several of his artists and shares with them a fascination for the spontaneity of gesture, the power of color, and the expressiveness of forms. His unique style has earned him international recognition and makes him one of the most important representatives of Nordic art after the war.
Throughout his career, Bengt Lindström has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Sweden, France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. His works are kept in many public and private collections, notably at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and in several Scandinavian museums. In parallel with his canvas production, he creates many monumental sculptures, frescoes, mosaics, and works integrated into public space. Through a work where expressionism, Nordic mythology, contemporary painting, Scandinavian art, color, material, expressive figuration, and monumental sculpture combine with exceptional force, Bengt Lindström remains one of the unmissable figures in the history of modern European art.
