Wood Paintings for Sale
Wood as a support occupies an essential place in the history of painting and is now experiencing a significant revival in contemporary artistic practices, offering a surface that is at once solid, warm, and organic, directly influencing the final appearance of the work.
Used since Antiquity and brought to its height in the painted panels of the Italian and Flemish Renaissance, where masters such as Jan van Eyck and Botticelli took advantage of its stability and ability to receive delicate layers of glazing, it gradually gave way to canvas before making a strong return in contemporary creation.
This renewed interest forms part of a broader attention to the materiality of the support as an integral component of the artwork itself: knots, grains, and irregularities in the wood are no longer concealed but incorporated into the composition, creating a rich visual and tactile dialogue with the painted surface. Some artists allow the grain to remain visible through diluted layers of paint, while others play with the contrast between the roughness of the support and the fluidity of broad fields of color, turning wood into a material with a dual nature, functioning both as a support and as an expressive medium.
On Artsper, this selection highlights paintings on wood in which artists explore the natural qualities of the material to enrich the composition, demonstrating the enduring vitality of an ancestral medium reinvented through contemporary perspectives.
