Description
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)
Vermeer painted around forty pictures in his lifetime. He married in 1653, raised about ten children, and only left Delft once or twice to go to Amsterdam and as often to Utrecht.
2022 (1673) – Oil on canvas and uppercut. Private collection.
"Another one the Flemish won't have," Vermeer is said to have remarked to his mother-in-law when he gave her this small painting for her 80th birthday; Maria Thins was a wealthy woman who had left her husband and obtained custody of her daughters. This work symbolizes the fight of women against domestic violence.
Presentation
The digital brush and the bold pixel are Olivier Dupont Delestraint's tools for transforming the paintings he photographs during his travels. He then writes the true story of fake paintings created, in their time, by real artists. He teases our fetishistic relationship with masterpieces, challenges the power of the label; he plays on a very contemporary question: what constitutes authority?
