Description
This captivating artwork captures an intimate moment in Parisian daily life. The setting is a typical French café, marked by a round wooden table on which a glass of red wine delicately rests. The scene is dominated by an elegantly posed female figure, whose flowing, deep red dress contrasts beautifully with the red metal chairs of the café. The black of her jacket adds a mysterious depth, while the black boots and crossed wrist create a symphony of shapes and textures. The choice of colors is bold and well-deliberated, evoking both passion and melancholy. The subtle lighting highlights the vibrant red of the dress, immediately drawing the viewer's eye. The wine glass adds a luxurious and sophisticated dimension, referencing the refined and epicurean French culture. An intriguing aspect of this work is the graceful hand holding a cigarette, bringing tension between the quiet moment and a possible personal reflection or meditation. The flowing lines of the skirt create visual movement that brings this static scene to life, while the slightly off-center viewing angle invites one to immerse oneself further in the intimate atmosphere of the café. This work exudes an emotional and nostalgic ambiance, accurately depicting the beauty of ordinary moments. It transcends the mundane to become a visualized meditation on solitude, elegance, and urban serenity. It is a vibrant tribute to Parisian aesthetics and the art of living.
Presentation
Julie Peiffer is a French photographer born in 1967 in Nancy. She lives and works in France.
After an initial career in the press, she has been developing a practice as an author since 2020.
Her work explores the relationships between bodies, memory, alteration, and landscape. From intimate scenes to the territories she photographs today, she is interested in what disturbs our perception of reality. Surfaces, thresholds, reflections, and erasures traverse her images and make the visible unstable.
This attention to alteration has progressively shifted from the photographed subject to the image itself and its materiality, in long-term series where experiments with the support question the stability of the photographic image.
In 2026, Julie Peiffer is the laureate of the Prix de la Photographie Féminine In Cadaqués (Fisheye × In Cadaqués). Finalist of the Prix SAUF × Les Femmes exhibited in 2024 and 2026, she received an individual grant for the creation of the City of Nancy in 2025.
Her work is present in the collection of the Hermès Foundation as well as in private collections in France and internationally.
