Everyone knows his most famous painting « This is not a pipe » that represents… just that.

Born in 1898, Magritte is considered as the artist that announced the surrealist movement. Special feature on this artist who is recognized as the most important Belgium painter of the 20th century.

To Magritte, it is the painter’s action on the object that is interesting. Painting is not a representation of reality but rather a representation of the artist’s thoughts on the object. « The art of painting cannot really only limit itself to describing an idea that shows a certain ressemblance with the visible things the world offers us » he declared. Magritte excels in representing mental images and creating artworks that transform reality and throw off the audience. His paintings are never a mirror of the reality that surrounds us, it is the mirror of the reality he imagines within him.

In honor of the anniversary of his death, August 15, 1967, Artsper shares with you a selection of surrealist artists whose works and creative processes were greatly inspired by René Magritte.
