La Libera Secessione
Tra il 1898 e il 1919 si verificarono rapidi e radicali cambiamenti sulla scena artistica tedesca. Dall'impressionismo all'expressionisme, da cubismo, dal futurismo alla Nuova Oggettività e al Costruttivismo: Berlino ha visto molti movimenti, dalla Secessione di Berlino al Gruppo di Novembre. Nel 1898 fu fondata la Secessione di Berlino in opposizione alle politiche culturali consolidate e obsolete dell'Impero tedesco. Ha rappresentato i movimenti artistici moderni, in particolare l'impressionismo. Ma a partire dal 1910, un altro gruppo di giovani artisti sfidò l'arte dell'impressionismo: la Nuova Secessione, una viene fondato un gruppo di espressionisti. E quattro anni dopo le divergenze all'interno della Secessione di Berlino si scontrarono nuovamente: qui nacque la Secessione Libera.
La Secessione Libera, o in tedesco "Freie Secession", era un'associazione di artisti moderni di Berlino che organizzava mostre collettive tra il 1914 e il 1923. Il movimento fu creato dopo l'abbandono di 42 membri, alla fine del 1913, la Secessione di Berlino – che perde così la maggioranza dei suoi membri e quasi tutti i suoi artisti più eminenti. Il disastro della Prima Guerra Mondiale accelerò lo sviluppo dell'arte. Nel 1918 fu fondato il Gruppo di Novembre che si concentrò sugli aspetti politici dell'arte. Max Liebermann, ex cofondatore e leader della Secessione di Berlino, viene nominato presidente onorario della Secessione Libera. Altri membri degni di nota includono Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Theo von Brockhusen e Charles Crodel.
