Description
Miriam Cantera (Madrid, 1969) is a printmaker who graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1992, specialising in printmaking, and took doctoral courses in 20th-century Art History. She co-founded the engraving workshop Chofereta and, in 2003, El Mono de la Tinta, a printmaking workshop and exhibition space. She trained further in lithography on stone and plate at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Palma de Mallorca (1996), in professional lithography and printing at Arteleku in Donostia (1999), and in non-toxic printmaking and photopolymers at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Seriado in Alcalá la Real (2004). Her awards and grants include an Erasmus scholarship at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht (1991), a Menéndez Pelayo International University scholarship in lithography (1993), a creation grant at the Fundación Noesis workshop in Calaceite, Teruel (1996), an honourable mention at the 31st Carmen Arozena International Engraving Prize (2003) and a runner-up prize at the Deutsche Stiftung Engraving Prize (1999). She has exhibited regularly at Estampa in Madrid with several galleries, has held solo shows including Fundación CIEC in Betanzos (2006) and Galería Antonio Camba in Palma de Mallorca, and has been selected in many printmaking and lithography competitions. Atelier Presse Papier invited her to a residency and solo exhibition in Trois-Rivières (Canada), and she received a residency grant from the Artist-in-Residence Program of Atelier Circulaire in Montreal. Lithography is her chosen medium, enriched in recent years by intaglio printing. By researching the "limits" of lithography, she has created works that can only be installed in the space they are moved to, which shapes their composition and integrates the viewer into a new place. Her work is held in collections including the Comunidad de Madrid, the Fundación Florencio de la Fuente in Huete (Cuenca), Grupo CL, the Casa Museo Zanglada 2A in Palma de Mallorca, the Banco Santander collection and the Fundación BBV.
