En optique, il est la somme de toutes les couleurs. Dans nos esprits, il est l'absence absolue de couleur. Chez les artistes, le statut du blanc n'a cessé d'évoluer et de se réinventer. Non-couleur ou révélateur de couleur ? Blanc immatériel ou blanc matière ? Absence ou tâche ?

Dès l'Antiquité, le blanc est utilisé pour sa valeur symbolique. Quand chez les Grecs, où l'on peignait systématiquement les statues, il est synonyme d'inachèvement alors que pour les Romains il symbolise le faste et la vertu impériale. Avec le christianisme, le blanc est utilisé en opposition au noir, le bien divin et sacré face aux ténèbres. A contrario, il peut aussi symboliser la mort et la maladie, comme le montrent notamment les représentations du Christ famélique.

A la Renaissance, on utilise le blanc pour sublimer les visages et les atours. De Vinci en tirera même son concept de sfumato, une pénétration du clair dans le sombre. Tout au long de la tradition picturale, le blanc sera précieux en raison de sa capacité à réfléchir la lumière. Il attire l'Å“il, même en infime quantité, et illumine le sujet. Cet effet d'exhausteur de contrastes, on peut le voir chez Rembrandt ou Vermeer et sa Jeune Fille à la perle. 

Chez les Impressionnistes, le blanc sera utilisé comme la plus lumineuse des nuances de gris. Tandis que Manet produit des toiles précurseuses du monochrome comme La Lecture où quasiment tout n'est que blancheur, Monet livre un dégradé de blancs avec l'Effet de neige à Giverny. Mais le premier vrai monochrome blanc apparaîtra avec le Carré blanc sur fond blanc de Malevitch, lequel déclarera : « J'ai troué l'abat-jour bleu des limitations colorées, je suis sorti dans le blanc Â».

Les modernes vont se passionner pour le blanc, s'accordant sur sa pleine valeur. Miro notamment questionnera le statut du blanc sur la toile. Dans son tableau Femme, oiseau, étoile, le blanc est à la fois positivement peint et brille par son absence immatérielle autour de l'étoile. Picasso, quant à lui, explorera la valeur du blanc en parallèle de ses célèbres périodes colorées, comme on peut le voir avec sa Femme étendue à la main gigantesque. Piero Manzoni, enfin, est devenu célèbre grâce à ses « Achromes Â», série de toiles exclusivement composées de nuances de blanc. Le blanc, au XXe siècle, devient donc l'aboutissement de l'abstraction minimale. Pour certains, comme Kandinsky, cette couleur cosmique est associée à une quête spirituelle de l'absolu, guidant l'artiste dans l'expression de ses émotions. 

Aujourd'hui, le blanc est un sujet de recherche artistique toujours aussi prisé. Roman Opalka est devenu célèbre pour ses suites de nombres en blanc sur blanc tandis que Daniel Arsham réinvestit les murs blancs des galeries en y faisant dégouliner ses Å“uvres. Le blanc est donc une couleur pleine à la symbolique multiple. Couleur divine de l'humilité, couleur de la pureté et de l'immaculé, couleur du vide et de l'absence mais couleur toujours. Si le bleu a son Klein et le rouge son Rothko, aucun maître n'est parvenu pour le moment à dompter pleinement le blanc. Peut-être le trouverez vous dans notre sélection Artsper !
