Nature morte

Sujet pourtant classique, la nature morte a été le sujet de prédilection du peintre Cézanne - artiste qui a permis de faire entrer l'art dans sa phase la plus moderne. Du cubisme à l'Hyper-réalisme via le Pop Art, la sculpture et la photographie se sont également emparées du sujet afin de montrer à quel point il est possible de renouveler ce thème.

Complètement déstructurée, humoristique, classique ou minimaliste, la nature morte contemporaine est loin d'être un sujet démodé tout en profitant d'une renommée historique.

Retour sur l'histoire de ce thème si récurrent dans l'histoire de l'art. Dans l'Antiquité, Pline fait déjà état dans ses écrits “des provisions de cuisine" du peintre Piraikos et des trompes l'oeil de Zeuxis dont les oiseaux tentent de picorer les raisins tant ils semblaient vrais. Cependant, la nature morte telle qu'on la qualifie aujourd'hui date véritablement du XVIIème siècle et se développe d'abord en Hollande qui impose au genre des codes esthétiques très strictes. 

On privilégie généralement les huiles sur toile pour représenter des objets inanimés, des mets divers (beaucoup de fruits, du poisson, du gibier…) et des fleurs. Les couleurs sont très sombres, le fond monochrome noir, l'ambiance pesante et l'éclairage diagonal. Il y a peu d'élément mais ils sont organisés de façon précises et regorgent de symboles religieux.

Si la nature morte est souvent marginalisée et ne constitue pas un genre à part entière, tous les grands maîtres s'y sont essayés. Au XIXème siècle, tous les mouvements artistiques y passent: romantisme, impressionnisme, symbolisme… Et sous les pinceaux de Degas, Cézanne, Monet, etc, la nature morte change. 

Petit à petit, reviennent les couleurs, s'effacent les références bibliques et apparaissent de plus en plus d'objets du quotidien, partagés par le plus grand nombre: ustensiles de cuisine, tasse à café, lampe à gaz, instruments de musique... 

Au XXème siècle, l'art moderne dépoussière ce sujet “ennuyant" et se jouent de ses codes. Du cubisme au pop art, en passant par le surréalisme, tous les mouvements artistiques y mettent leur patte et subliment la nature morte. Tour à tour, ils s'en emparent, la déconstruisent pour l'amener de plus en plus vers la nature morte contemporaine qui n'a plus grand chose à voir avec la nature morte d'origine, si ce n'est son thème. 

Après sa séparation avec Olga Khokhlova en 1936, Pablo Picasso peint La Nature Morte à la Lampe dont les éléments plastiques annoncent déjà Guernica. Une ampoule à la lumière blafarde domine la composition triangulaire au centre de la toile. Aussi, le bras d'un sculpture antique semble prêt à tomber de la table. Si l'ensemble de l'oeuvre s'éloigne de la nature morte classique, l'ambiance globale reste lourde et pesante. 

En 1956, le peintre catalan surréaliste, Salvador Dali, réalise, avec beaucoup d'humour, comme à son habitude, Nature Morte Vivante. Séparée en deux (nuit et jour), la toile représente une table sur un balcon. Les éléments (vin, eau, poire, couteau…) sont en mouvement ou plutôt en lévitation comme si on venait de donner un coup dans la table.
