Dao Bei

Great poet and prose writer, the most important representative of the contemporary poetry movement in China. He was born in Beijing in 1949. In 1979, with the poet Mang Ke, he founded, in the same city, the literary review Today (Jintian), of which he was and remains the editor-in-chief. From 1987 he lived in Europe, North America, teaching at many universities. He is currently Honorary Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In 2009, he created the “Hong Kong Nights of International Poetry”, of which he is the director, and publishes in Chinese language two collections of poetry collections presenting to the Chinese readership the most representative works of contemporary poets from around the world: The Red Fox Series and In the Mirror Series. His works, poetry and prose, have been published in over thirty languages. In French, two collections of poetry have appeared in Circe editions: Au bord du ciel (1995) and Paysage above zero (2004). Poems have appeared in the reviews Europe, Action poétique and Po & sie, in the collection Quatre poètes chinois (Éditions Ulysse fin de siècle, 1991), as well as in the Anthology of Chinese poetry, Gallimard, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 2015. His novel Vagues was published by Éditions Philippe Picquier (1993) and a collection of short stories by Circé (13, rue du Bonheur, 1999).

The collection of prose Open the doors of the city has already been translated into French (forthcoming). He was invited to France as part of “Les Belles Étrangères, Chine” (1988), at the Salon du Livre in Paris (2004). He read his works at other events, notably in March 2000 at the “Grande lecture” cycle of the Pompidou center, at the Molière Theater in June 2015 for the closing ceremony of the Biennale des Poètes in Val de Marne. He has received numerous awards including the Tucholsky from the Swedish Penclub, the PEN / Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award in 1990, the Guggenheim Scholarship, the Golden Wreath, He was named Honorary Lifetime Academician from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He started painting in 2012.
