Afrikanische Ästhetik
Wie lässt sich die afrikanische Ästhetik definieren? Ein Kontinent, der aus 54 Ländern besteht - jedes mit seiner eigenen Kultur, seinen eigenen Traditionen und seinen eigenen sozialen Strukturen - bringt zweifellos stilistisch vielfältige afrikanische Künstler hervor.
Die literarische Bewegung Négritude wurde von den Schriftstellern Aimé Césaire, Léon Damas und Léopold Sédar Senghor ins Leben gerufen und spielte eine große Rolle bei der Entwicklung der modernen afrikanischen Kunst. Die Bewegung wurde 1937 von einer Gruppe afrikanischer Kunststudenten in Paris gegründet, einer Stadt mit einer toleranten und vielfältigen Kunstszene, und breitete sich weltweit aus. Ziel der Bewegung war es, den Kolonialismus zu kritisieren und eine Wertschätzung für die Schwarze und afrikanische Kultur zu fördern, deren Auswirkungen zweifellos für die zeitgenössische afrikanische Kunstszene von großer Bedeutung sind.
Léopold Sédar Senghor zufolge, müsse die afrikanische Kunst die Modernität der Gegenwart widerspiegeln, indem sie auf zeitgenössische soziale Themen und künstlerische Stile reagiere und gleichzeitig die traditionelle Kultur feiere. Die afrikanische Ästhetik der bildenden Kunst, die sich auch auf andere modernistische Bewegungen wie die Harlem Renaissance und den Surrealismus stützt, orientiert sich an diesen Grundsätzen und wird heute von Künstlern wie Angu Walters vermittelt, der sich auf das Alltagsleben in afrikanischen Dörfern konzentriert. Faie Davis hingegen versucht, mit ihrer Linse eine Wertschätzung für diejenigen einzufangen, die die Tradition bewahren.
