
Biography
Gyula Halász, aka Brassaï, was a Hungarian-French sculptor, photographer, writer and filmmaker. Born in 1899, he moved to Paris in 1924 to work as a journalist.
Brassaï is known for his black-and-white photographs of Paris. Capturing the cities' nightlife in the 30s, he photographed both the harsh realities and the high life of Parisian society. Brassaï is also known for his portraits of other prominent artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Dalí.
Braissaï's works can be found in the permanent collections of several international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He died in France in 1984.
