Presentation

Graduate of the School of Arts and Crafts of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) in 1983, specialising in Sculpture, with stone as his favourite material, Millan Garayalde worked until 1988 as assistant-sculptor for the realization of the Saints in the central portico of the New Cathedral of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Subsequently, he became involved in the restoration of historical monuments.

Based in Perpignan for more than 20 years, he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and symposiums in France and abroad (Italy, Spain, Israel, etc.) and some of his sculptures are now exhibited in public places.

Certain forms are recurrent in his works, especially those that recall characters that transport us to his abstract universe.

For him, “…the size of the piece provides a rare pleasure, whether or not accompanied by the resistance of the material. The development of the work, in the long term, requires keeping the initial idea throughout the process, but it's necessary to accept that this idea can also be modified.

Seeking in the material, tensions and nudity, I attempt to turn volume into vital forms and visual symbols that submerge us into a world where we can see the invisible and feel the inexplicable. “

He works mainly with stone, especially marble and granite, but also ventures into other materials such as wood and bronze.
