
Biography
Shahzia Sikander is a Pakistani-American artist. Her multimedia practice is celebrated for its pioneering role in the development of neo-miniature art.
Sikander received her BFA from the National College of Arts Lahore and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 and 1995 respectively. During her studies in Pakistan, Sikander learnt the techniques of Indo-Persian miniature paintings, which would inform her contemporary practice. Praised for the role her artworks have played in presenting the South Asian diaspora as a contemporary American tradition, Sikander has been the recipient of several prestigious awards. In 2012, she was awarded the US Department of State Medal of Arts. In 2023, Sikander received the Pollock Prize for Creativity.
Recent exhibitions of Sikander's works have taken place across the United States, in Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
