Astrid Dahl

South Africa

Biography

Astrid Dahl creates ceramic works of sculptural abstraction. Inspired by the botanical photographs of Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) she sculpts flowers of strange and poetic beauty.

She plays with scale and her works always exceed the dimensions of her botanical inspirations. “Sometimes my works are so big that I hear the echo of my own voice when I speak."

Working from an isolated farm in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands of South Africa, this young woman is inspired by the nature which surrounds her that is very specific to the region.

Like many South African artists, despite the exposure of her work abroad, she has never left South Africa and her work represents a uniquely South African view of the world around her.
