Biography
Born in Lausanne in 1865 to a bourgeois Swiss family, Félix Vallotton was a French-Swiss oil painter and printmaker. A cornerstone figure in the development of the modern woodcut, the artist's body of work was broadly diverse. Today, his portraits, landscapes and still life paintings are remembered for their realistic and unemotional style.
In 1892, Vallotton became a member of the Les Nabis group of artists. After years of growing recognition within the artistic community, the artist's work was exhibited in collections across Europe and the world. In 1912, the French government offered him the Legion of Honor in honor of his contribution to the nation's artistic culture, but Vallotton refused the award. In 1925, the artist died in Paris.
