Biography
Julian is based in the gorgeous town of St Ives in Cornwall, an area internationally famous for its art and artists with a long tradition of names such as Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost etc.
He studied art, especially the life model, for four years under the likes of John Raynes and Ray Tovey. His work hangs in private collections and galleries across the UK, Europe, the US and Australasia.
His art includes the coast, the town and city and the natural places of England as well as those sights which have especially appealed to him from around the world.
His style he describes as roughly impressionism meets realism and his paintings, in exhibiting both characteristics, demand to be viewed from close-to and also from some distance. This way the full effects of abstraction and mark-making are appreciated as well as the remarkable realism which he achieves.
His abiding aim though - his overriding reach - is for the often fleeting atmosphere of the places or situations he depicts. That spiritual essence, the soul-of-place which we take away with us when we leave the garden or beach or town. That which has deeply moved us in ways impossible to describe with words. The perfect moments sometimes given to us.
Julian tutors his own methods in art privately at his studio when he has the time.
