Presentation

Malerie Marder's intimate photographs evoke a world of sterile rooms, sensual memories, romantic rendezvous, secrets, nostalgia, and suburban fantasy. Her nudity is a metaphor for candid, no-bullshit conversation and her 4x5 lens is an X-ray, not a Valentine's Day.

Marder has spent a lifetime candidly examining the human form, immortalizing it in all its flaws and glories. His work taps into the hidden workings of the brain, the internal struggles of the heart, the restlessness of the soul. For six years (2008-2013), Marder worried about making a body of work, part hallucinatory, part real, of sex workers in the Netherlands entitled "Anatomy."

"I used to need rational reasons for why I did a certain type of work, but I often end up in places out of instinct and wonder. On the signs in the museum, you can read about the paintings of prostitutes by Toulouse - Lautrec and how their bodies were less forced and expected. I found myself similarly mesmerized by the idea that a person's survival could also be their art.

Earlier this year, Marder released a body of work titled "SNAFU - Situtation Normal All Fucked Up" consisting of still and animated images of the artist and Disney-like cartoons in a state of isolation, despair, mocking hilarity, and illness. During the pandemic, Malerie Marder went on an archeological dig to uncover a treasure trove of her black and white photographs made from 1990 to 1995 (ages 19-25).
