Biography
Steve Wolfe (1955–2016) was a renowned American artist celebrated for his mastery of trompe l'oeil, creating hyperrealistic sculptures and drawings that transform two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional illusions. Deeply inspired by the books and vinyl records of the 1960s and 1970s, his meticulously crafted works reflect cultural memory, intellectual history, and materiality.
Wolfe's pieces are held in major public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum, MoMA, The Menil Collection, SFMOMA, and the Israel Museum. His acclaimed solo exhibitions include a 2009 retrospective at the Whitney, traveling to The Menil and LACMA.
Using acrylic, oil, aluminum, canvas, and lithography, Wolfe recreated iconic literary and musical objects—intentionally worn and aged—to explore nostalgia, consumer culture, and identity. His legacy remains influential in the contemporary art market for its conceptual rigor and visual precision.
