Biography
That Lisa Beck's personal universe emanates from a modest basement studio in Brooklyn would seem implausible. Her work investigates perception, our need to find order in chaos, to contemplate and make sense of what is visible and what is visceral.
These investigations take the form of expansive wall paintings, sculptures, installations, works on paper, single- and multi·paneled paintings, all of which, in one way or another, address notions of space and time, and our place in relation to nature and the universe.
Beck's interest in science, astronomy, and physics, in plants and the natural world, reminds us that the studio can be seen as a laboratory, that "the big picture" is always examined in details, incrementally, and that we are only ever afforded a glimpse - of a world in a microscope, the heavens in a telescope.
