Biography
John Lurie is a musician, actor, director, producer and painter born in 1952. Famous for appearing in Jim Jarmush’s films and television series such as Fishing with John, he received high praise from Cohen, Bowie and Beck. In the 80s, he focused on painting « a lot and seeing lots of my friends, like Basquiat, Schnabel, Clemente and James Narres. »
He recorded 22 albums with the « Lounge Lizards » formed in 1978. Having suffered from Lyme disease, he gave up the alto sax to paint prolifically. His first works were in vivid watercolour and pencil, before moving to oil paints after the turn of the millennium. Through surrealist associations, puns and underground references, the artist adds a touch of madness to a feeling of concern tempered by irony and a pop-rock tone. His works can be intriguing or caricatures, dreamlike or nightmarish and feature people or animals. They vary from the unusual to including sexual connotations.
Several gallery exhibitions have established his name on the New York and international stages.
