Barbara Kruger: Posters
Barbara Kruger is a contemporary conceptual American artist specializing in collaging. She is best known for her posters which combine images and text which are in essence direct criticisms of 21st century American culture. She is often grouped with other feminist postmodernist artists such as Jenny Holzer and Cindy Sherman. This is because of their similar exploration of gender and sexuality through imagery often used in mass-media and advertising, in order to create interesting statements due to the juxtaposition of these components.
Her provocative art touches on a variety of subjects, ranging from consumerist culture, to sexuality and femininity, to identity and ideas concerning power in the modern world. She uses black and white images with red accents, whilst consistently using the same fonts to create a sense of cohesion between artworks, and is heavily inspired by Russian Constructivist artist Alexander Rodechenko. Through her bold, striking statements like “I shop therefore I am" and “Who owns what?", she captivates viewers and encourages them to reflect on their own position and beliefs within society. By being direct with her audience, using pronouns such as "you", "your", "I", "we", and "they", her work instantly becomes personal, one of the crucial ways her artworks resonate with many people.
