Movement Free Figuration
Free Figuration is an art movement that emerged in the 1980s in France, bringing together artists such as Robert Combas, Hervé Di Rosa, François Boisrond, and Rémi Blanchard. Inspired by the energy of street art and comic books, this form of contemporary art is characterized by vivid colors, expressive shapes, and a free, spontaneous style. Alongside figures like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat in the United States, Free Figuration established itself as a bold response to traditional artistic movements.
Robert Combas is often considered the founder of Free Figuration, incorporating references to popular culture, music, and graphic arts into his works. Hervé Di Rosa, on the other hand, explores a colorful and narrative universe, influenced by naive art and the world of advertising posters. François Boisrond and Rémi Blanchard also bring their personal touch, blending abstraction and figuration to give the movement a unique visual diversity.
Numerous exhibitions have been dedicated to Free Figuration, notably at the Musée Paul Valéry in Sète, a key city for this artistic movement. This creative wave has crossed borders, influencing international artists like Kenny Scharf and Tseng Kwong Chi.
