A masterpiece of great power, produced with great virtuosity. The expression of will and pride of this Minoan princess is reminiscent of that of Danaerys Targaryen… Artist's comment: “This painting speaks of a vanished city or of a myth, of a legend of a golden and harmonious city. There are controversies over this civilization; some locate it in the Atlantic, hence its name, others in Crete. I started from the hypothesis that the famous city called "Atlantis" was of Minoan civilization. What is a Minoan? Researchers have uncovered the remains of a very ancient civilization that lived in Crete: they called it the Minoan world, in reference to the myth of King Minos. [This] ancient civilization […] developed on the islands of Crete, Santorini and probably over much of the Aegean Sea, in southern Greece, from 2700 to 1200 BC. In this work I speak of the disappearance of this world. According to legend, Minos asks the god of the sea, Poseidon, to give him a magnificent animal that he will sacrifice for the god. Then from the sea, Poseidon brings forth a magnificent white bull. But Minos decides to cheat on him and doesn't sacrifice the bull and keep it to himself. To punish Minos, Poseidon drives the bull mad, and the bull destroys Crete. Legend for the Minoan civilization that disappeared in a cataclysm? All the details of the painting are documented and reproduce what existed at the time. The brightly colored costume with an apron over it and a dagger in front of the bodice, stuck in the belt; the preferred colors were red and yellow. The young girl who symbolizes the Minoan people has, wrapped around an arm, a serpent that had many meanings. The serpent goddess was found in house sanctuaries, as "house serpents": she seems to be related to domesticity and women. Near her flies a griffin, a mixture of lion and eagle, again a very popular symbol, linked to nature. Behind the goddess is a section of the palace of Knossos, discovered in Crete, typical with its red columns. In the back of the palace, there is a fresco: artists dance on a bull; the fresco really exists. For me she represents Men, these crazy people who dance on the world. This good old world, very solid but who can't take it anymore! Like this dying civilization engulfed in water! Because the goddess lifts her arms and lets herself be swallowed up by the rising waters, in sacrifice. The same goes for our civilization which is also disappearing, because if we look closely at the canvas, the reflection at the bottom of it represents the skyscrapers of New York in the water. Nothing can save us? Maybe nature itself symbolized by the two "animals"? "

Andrée Bars is a French painter.

Andrée Bars learned painting in the pure tradition of the great masters of the 19th century: for four years she was a student of the realist painter Ted Seth Jacobs, himself heir and promoter of classical techniques, and founder of the Albert School. Defois.

Andrée Bars applies his mastery of pictorial techniques to paint in an almost hyperrealistic way themes that are sometimes surrealist, sometimes symbolist.
