Artwork location: Germany

Inspired by his famous wooden reliefs, artist Stephan Balkenhol has created a paper edition entitled “Man with a white shirt". The artwork, consisting of a hand-cast paper relief, was uniquely hand-painted by Stephan Balkenhol. The original motif was created in 2017 and completed in 2023 as an edition of 40 copies.

Stephan Balkenhol mounted the silhouette of the portrait on paper behind a matt black wooden panel and framed it in a wooden frame. Balkenhol, world-famous for his sculptures, has created an impressive illusion here with the material paper, as the paper can hardly be distinguished from wood in terms of its appearance. The man portrayed looks at the viewer insistently and straightforwardly; individual traces are lost in his face in favor of an almost universal expression. It is a broad spectrum of possibilities of identification that fan out before our eyes and touch the viewer in its fullness and openness. The artistic means chosen for color and motif are almost minimalist, and yet Balkenhol pulls out all the stops of his virtuosity in this work. The personal dissolves in favor of the universal. Stephan Balkenhol (born 1957) is considered a pioneer in contemporary figurative sculpture and one of Germany's most internationally renowned artists.

The recurring motif of the man with a white shirt and black trousers is one of his most famous figurations; it is both a self-portrait and an archetype. His rendering as a larger-than-life cast on paper unfolds an enormously vivid presence without Balkenhol really having executed the individual features of a portrait. The viewer is accompanied by an enigmatically scrutinizing, open and non-pressuring gaze over his shoulder. The private space thus becomes a place of dialog with the artwork. With the paper cast “Large Head Relief" by Stephan Balkenhol, Edition Pablo has achieved a congenial realization of his sculptural works, the like of which has never been seen before in printmaking. The result offers the viewer an individual art experience of great emotional intimacy and the collector a piece of innovative editioned graphic art with a museum-like character.

This artwork presents a striking portrait with a singular focus on the subject's intense gaze. Rendered with bold, textured brushstrokes, the face emerges from the canvas with a palpable depth. The artist has chosen a minimalist color palette, emphasizing shades of ivory, rich browns, and subtle hints of red that artfully highlight the subject's facial features. The eyes, rendered in a piercing shade of blue, draw immediate attention, contrasting sharply with the muted background. The slightly turned pose adds a dynamic quality, suggesting movement and a contemplative demeanor. The distinctive approach to texture, particularly in the hair and skin, evokes a tactile sensation, enhancing the three-dimensional feel of the piece. This deliberate choice of technique and color encapsulates the emotional intensity, making it a compelling study of human expression and connecting the observer directly to the subject's world.

Presentation

Known for his wooden sculptures, Stephan Balkenhol carves his figures directly from tree trunks – often wawa or cedar wood – using a mallet and a chisel, without trying to erase the traces left by his tools. This unique technique gives a sense of individuality to each sculpture, further reinforced by the colors chosen to structure and animate the figures. Placed at human height on raw wooden plinths, these men, women and even hybrid beings that seem plucked from an ephemeral tale or opera, appear both distanced and in tune with the viewer. Balkenhol's early works of male or female nudes on pedestals echo classical Greek statues. This focus on the human form set him apart from the contemporary art movements of the 1970s, when the emphasis was on abstract, Minimal and Conceptual approaches and figuration had fallen from favor. By the 1990s, his repertoire had expanded to include animals and hybrid creatures, as well as the introduction of architectural motifs and reliefs. Recent works feature contemporary figures dressed in everyday attire.
