Photographie Abstraite

La photographie abstraite, ou photographie expérimentale, est l'art de réaliser un effet visuel et de créer une image n'ayant aucun point d'ancrage immédiat dans la réalité à travers des procédés spécifiques sur la prise de vue : mise au point, le cadrage ou bien post traitement grâce à la retouche photo.

La photographie abstraite peut par exemple isoler un fragment d'une image ordinaire pour l'isoler de son contexte d'origine et le redonner à voir d'une manière surréaliste au spectateur. Elle peut aussi impliquer le recours au flou, à des ombres ou des jeux de lumières; des textures ou des formes inattendues.
L'image est souvent créée via du matériel photographique traditionnel (appareil photo argentique ou numérique, chambre noire, ordinateur). On peut cependant dans certains cas trouver des photographies abstraites créées à partir de pellicule manipulée ou autre diapositive précédemment développée pour réaliser une oeuvre originale…

Les premières images qu'on appelle désormais “photographies abstraites" apparaissent peu de temps après l'invention du daguerréotype par Louis Daguerre et de la photographie en 1830. En 1842, John William Draper crée de nouvelles images avec un spectroscope. Cette machine disperse les faisceaux de lumière et permet d'observer un phénomène jusqu'alors invisible à l'oeil nu. Les impressions qu'il en tire n'ont rien de commun avec les oeuvres immortalisées par d'autres photographes et elles ouvrent le champs des possibles à la création photographique.
Draper considérait ces images avant tout comme une découverte scientifique mais sa démarche artistique est aujourd'hui largement salué par la critique pour son originalité intrinsèque.

En Angleterre, Anna Atkins est aussi précurseur de la photographie abstraite. Elle est la première (et la seule?!) à placer des algues sèches directement sur le papier cyanotype. Cette expérience testée pour le progrès de la science fait avancer la technique photo en créant des clichés bleus et blancs uniques.

La découverte du rayon-X puis successivement de la radioactivité en 1896 a suscité une fascination du public pour l'invisible et la réponse des photographes au phénomène ne se fait pas attendre. Le Français Louis Darget tente de capturer la pensée en pressant ses modèles de projeter l'image de leur réflexion sur des plaques vierges; il réalisa des milliers d'expériences sur ce sujet principal.

C'est bien au XX° siècle, que la photographie abstraite gagne du terrain. Une nouvelle vague artistique succède à l'impressionnisme, remplacé par le surréalisme et le cubisme notamment après le Salon d'Automne de 1903 à Paris. Celui-ci met en avant de nouveaux talents dont Pablo PicassoMarcel Duchamp... Dix ans plus tard, à New-York, au coeur du scandale, on découvre Vassily Kandinsky, Mondrian, Braque, Delaunay… Ce vent de liberté dans l'art abstrait inspire les grands photographes qui s'affranchissent aussi des règles.

Les premières images exposées en tant que photographies abstraite viennent de Erwin Quedenfeldt à Cologne en 1914. De 1920 à 1930, influencé par le cubisme, L'Europe et Prague notamment devient l'épicentre de la photographie conceptuelle avec Jaroslav Rossler, Josef Sudeck et Rössler qui dépasse l'abstraction représentative pour l'abstraction pure...

Cette tendance se prolonge dans les années 60 et 70 et avec Josef H Newman commence l'ère de la retouche post production dans l'atelier. Enfin avec l'avènement de l'ordinateur dans les années 90 et 2000, les possibilités sont décuplées et la nouvelle vague combine photo, sculpture et images de synthèse avec Penelope Umbrico, Peter KlasenDominic Harris, Vik Muniz et Nicolas Dubreuille pour produire des photographies plus conceptuelles.
