Artwork location: United Kingdom

The Person in a Double Exit Courtyard is an intriguing watercolour on paper by the celebrated Russian-Czech artist Eugene Ivanov, executed in 2007. This intimate piece, measuring 20.5 x 14.5 cm, showcases Ivanov's distinctive stylistic fusion of Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. Available through Stephenson's Gallery, the artwork invites the viewer into a fragmented, dream-like narrative characteristic of the artist's Prague-inspired oeuvre, where the boundaries between the physical world and the subconscious are masterfully blurred.

Visually, the composition is likely to feature Ivanov's signature geometric deconstruction, where the figure and the architectural setting of the courtyard interlace through angular planes and fluid washes of colour. The title suggests a conceptual depth, alluding to themes of choice, duality, or perhaps the labyrinthine nature of memory. Ivanov often employs a rich yet harmonious palette to evoke the atmospheric mood of Old Town Prague, and in this work, one can expect a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow that gives the small-scale format a surprising sense of monumentalism and spatial complexity.

Presentation

Eugene Ivanov, born in 1966 in Tyumen, Siberia, is a distinguished Russian-Czech painter and illustrator whose work is celebrated for its unique fusion of modern and traditional themes. Ivanov's artistic journey is an authentic story of passion; after initially pursuing a degree in engineering-geophysics and working in the field for three years, he pivoted to follow his true calling. This unconventional path, which he has cultivated professionally since 1989, imbues his work with an exceptional sense of dedication and originality.

Ivanov has been a prominent figure in the Prague art scene since 1998, where his work captures the city's old-world charm through a surrealistic lens. His paintings draw from the expressive traditions of Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism, creating dream-like compositions that explore the unconscious. Alongside his celebrated canvases, Ivanov has enjoyed a prolific career as a book illustrator, lending his distinctive vision to over 200 titles. This includes illustrated editions of works by literary giants such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail Bulgakov, and Franz Kafka. Ivanov has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and has successfully participated in major UK art fairs and exhibitions, solidifying his strong reputation among international collectors.
