About: David Shrigley (British, b.1968) is a celebrated Contemporary artist working in a distinctive drawing style, combining handwritten humorous text with child-like imagery of animals, people, aliens, and everyday still lives. In addition to his drawing practice, Shrigley also creates large-scale installations and sculptures that are derived from these works, as well as books, videos, photography, and other media. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including solo exhibitions at Anton Kern Gallery in New York, the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Yvon Lambert in Paris, and the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, among many others. Born in Macclesfield in the United Kingdom, Shrigley received his BFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 1991. He is the recipient of several honors, and was notably nominated for the Turner Prize in 2013. He chosen to create a new public sculpture for Trafalgar Square's “Fourth Plinth" in London for 2016. His work can be found in the public collections of major institutions around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Tate in London.

Presentation

David Shrigley is a Scottish artist born in 1968 in Macclesfield, UK. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and lives now in Brighton, England.

He is best known for his satirical drawings, critics of our daily life and social interactions. His recurring subjects depict a vision of a childish world, sometimes even including elements from childhood fantasies such as monsters and aliens.

His work focuses mostly on drawing, but is not limit to this practice, since he makes as well sculptures, installations, animations, paintings, photographs and even music. He collaborated in the transformation of the Sketch Gallery in London in a long-term program of restaurants designed by artists.

He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2013 and his work has been exhibited in several internationally renowned events such as his installation "Life Model" presented at the Unlimited platform of Art Basel in 2015. Some of his pieces are part of important international collections such as those at the MoMA in New York, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne or the Tate in London, just to name some.
