“Jean Cuillerat is a painter in search of light and spirit who was inspired by sacred texts but also by poetry. He illustrated and enriched in 1967, with his twenty etchings on art paper, the collection of poems "Meduses" written by Serge Wellens in 1965, and this is how his art was exhibited at the Gérard Mourgue gallery in Paris from 1967, and that the Galerie Lise Cormery, Paris also presents it.»
“Jean Cuillerat (1927-1998) was born on December 8, 1927 in Paris in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, into a family of farmers, at the heart of a family of eight children. It was as an adult that he studied at the Ecole du Louvre from 1955 to 1960, then at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and finally at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Throughout his life as a painter his quest will be not only artistic but also mystical, feeding on all the great currents of spiritual thought in the world which will thus mark symbolic periods marking his paintings or engravings.
Cuillerat said: "I was a rough stone that the Freemasons polished!" He was initiated on April 11, 1967, then joined the lodge of the Two Swans from its creation in 1976 where he became venerable in 1985-1986. He illustrates the newsletter of La Loge, paints or engraves the symbols, which are for the Freemasons, tools for building the temple of humanity between humans and the dead.
He practices Kabbalah for fifteen years, studies Hebrew and Jewish mysticism, which inspires him the paintings of the years 1964 and 1965, subject of a conference "The Parallel Aesthetics of Jean Cuillerat according to Kabbalah" by Adolphe Grad at the Institut Métalogique de Paris on November 13, 1964 and at the Galerie Gérard Mourgue in December 1965.
Then Cuillerat turns to the quest for Buddhism and the Mandalas.
Solo Shows 1949 Galerie Raja 1950 Galerie Cimaise 1962 Galerie Domec, Abstraction “Formes prismiques” 1962 Galerie Cimaise, Paris 1963 Galerie Cimaise, Paris 1965 Paintings on Jewish mysticism, Galerie Gérard Mourgue, December 1965. 1966 Theater scenery for “The Encephalogram by Jean-Pierre Simon 1967 Gérard Mourgue Gallery. 20 etchings and paintings after the poems of Serge Wellens in 1965 "Jellyfish".
1967 “Les Enfers” Galerie du Bastion Saint-André, Antibes, Collective exhibition with Hans Belimer. His "Christ on the Cross" was confiscated by the authorities, while his painting "The Exterminating Angel", in the fierce air of the time of the end of the 20th century, was freely exhibited.
1970 Galerie Jacques Casanova, Paris, edition of a poster for his exhibition where he presents predominantly blue works, with sumptuous art papers and his artistic quest between abstraction and symbols. In painting, his velvety tones are preferably combined with various shades of blue, a color present in his works until his last hour. 1970 Galerie Pierre Domec, Article in “Les Lettres Françaises” in May 1974 Center International d’Art Contemporain (CIAC), Paris 1974 Espace Ford, Paris 1975 Hôtel Méridien, Paris. »
