Bertrand Martin naît en 1975 à Verdun. Il grandit dans le sud de la Bourgogne. Dès son enfance, les sciences et les arts le passionnent. A partir de livres de dessins, de revues, et sous l'œil avisé de son grand-père aquarelliste, il dessine, apprend seul la maîtrise de son geste et les secrets de l'aléatoire.
Étudiant, il pratique assidûment la musique en s'investissant au conservatoire. En parallèle de ses classes préparatoires d'ingénieur, la photographie et le dessin accompagnent ses études. L'objectivité scientifique et l'acte de création, les contingences du réel et les errances de l'imaginaire bercent perpétuellement cette dualité en lui qu'il transforme en équilibre.
Un autre monde de contrastes débute par un déclic artistique en 1992, lorsque le film Indochine sort sur les écrans. L'artiste a 17 ans et se jette alors sur sa planche de dessins pour évoquer la beauté sublime, innocente, du visage de la jeune Camille qui contraste tant avec la violence qui l'entoure. « C'est cette même beauté éternelle et douce émergeant d'un monde chaotique, parfois brutal que je cherche à traduire dans mes travaux aujourd'hui. »
Bertrand obtient son diplôme d'école d'ingénieur, montre ses dessins qui ne remportent à l'époque pas le soutien du milieu de l'art. Il décide alors de mettre de côté temporairement ses travaux artistiques et de s'exiler en Asie. Taiwan, la Chine, le Cambodge, le Vietnam, la Thaïlande, la Corée du Sud sont autant de pays qu'il traverse et qui lui permettent de s'imprégner de la culture et de la langue chinoise.
De retour en France, il s'investit au sein de différents postes de direction dans le Spatial et obtient en parallèle un diplôme de MBA de la prestigieuse Business School INSEAD. Il évolue dès lors dans un univers de rigueur avec cette notion de dépassement des possibles.
Mais cette forme de défi a néanmoins ses limites et, à l'approche de ses 40 ans, en 2014, jaillit l'urgence de créer. Ce projet tant de fois repoussé s'impose désormais à lui comme un impératif vital, un sens nécessaire à sa vie.
Il se consacre d'abord à l'aquarelle. Bouillonnant de passion, il peint jour et nuit, profite de chaque instant pour dessiner, porté par ce désir de vouloir rattraper le temps perdu. Débute alors l'ère de la reconnaissance. Bertrand est invité à participer à plusieurs salons destinés à l'aquarelle, et se voit récompensé par des prix, des publications et des solo shows.
