Pavlina Pavlides (1920-1992) is a Greek Cypriot sculptor. "Pavlina Pavlides is the daughter of Sir Pavlos Pavlides, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II as Sir in 1955 when Cyprus Island was still under British colonial rule. The British Museum "purchased" or received Cypriot archeological art, 1250BC-1050BC, bronze from Paul Georges Pavlides. The family of Pavlina Pavlides family had to suffer all the plagues of Cyprus. The English invasion, followed by the anti-colonial struggle, until Cyprus became independent in 1960, but in 1974, after the Turkish invasion and its aftermath of a divided Cyprus which remains the case in the present day, she left Cyprus forever, as well as Greece, since the Greek military ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974.
In order to find peace, she settles in Paris and becomes a sculptor. Her art remains in the spirit of Cycladic ancestral masters, memories of her deep but broken roots, of the Aegean Sea, her mother earth.
For her Solo Show in 1987, at Lise Cormery Gallery in Paris, Art & Communication Group, a catalog is published, it is available in Pompidou Center Library, with a text by Prix Goncourt Frédérick Tristan. Pavlides shows her monumental sculptures and on marble pedestal, including "The hand of God" or "Enigma" and "Motherhood" showed during PARIS ART OLYMPIADS in 1991 and 1992, under the High Patronage of French President Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac, Mayor of Paris, since she was selected to represent Greece during the Art Olympiads organized by Lise Cormery Gallery for the CNOSF, French Olympic Committee. This international event was following the famous 1988 Art Olympiads in Seoul, South Korea, where a monumental Sculpture Museum in open air and a Museum of International paintings was created for the world competition, in order to invite and show the art of major international artists of the 20th century.
In 1987 Lise Cormery presents Pavlides sculptures to Jacqueline Beytout, famous art collector and President of Les Echos Group. Thus, Pavlides wins the Logo Price of Les Echos in 1988, Jacqueline Beytout offering Pavlides bronze sculptures of the 1987 show to the winners, the 1988 best French corporations. Publications. Her biography is included in "Post-War Ecole de Paris" by Lise Cormery. Paris, 2020. For Maria Photiou in her PHD, under the name of Pavlina Pavlidou, Pavlina Pavlides is considered like the main Pioneer Woman for XXth Century Post-War Artist in Greece and Cyprus."
