Christine Houssay operates a long-term mutation by avoiding the pitfall of academicism and realism. His sculptures are cut in a minimal way, in an economy of gestures where the essential takes precedence. The simplification of the masses tends towards an intelligent abstraction of strength and gentleness, embodied by the presence of the senses. “Abstraction is not a journey from one point to another. Presentation
Christine Houssay was born and grew up in Lorraine, a country that no longer exists. Currently, she lives and works in Paris and the Drôme.
She has always drawn and "tinkered", made silver photos from the age of 13, enamels on copper, sewing, calligraphy, oil painting, weaving on a loom she designed and made.
She has spent her life exploring her own identity: "to see elsewhere if I am there" (without necessarily moving around much in space) - "not to stay as soon as I learn nothing more". Around the age of 30, long before the existence of the Internet, she discovered silkscreen printing, printing as a multiple imprint "in the service of beauty, to be made available to the greatest number" and made printing her profession.
Later, when this profession was too much colonized by the computer, which made direct contact between humans and with matter useless, she discovered lithography and for 16 years made it her preferred mode of expression. She plans to take over an old linotype, in order to create a lithography and typography workshop for bibliophily publishing (this intention will come up against competition from better supported museum projects).
Since then, she has been practicing lithography, silkscreen printing, wood engraving, drawing, photography, painting, installations, and even performance; and for several years now, mainly wood sculpture.
