This work features a group of kneeling human figures, their arms raised toward the sky in a dramatic gesture. At the center of this juxtaposition, a ram's head adorned with imposing horns emerges, creating a contrast between human and animal. The rigorous symmetry and smooth finish give the whole an intriguing visual harmony. This sculpture, with its mystical dimension, questions our connection to the living.
Born in 1982, Jimena Schlaepfer lives and works in Mexico City. She studied visual arts at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving, “La Esmeralda".
Jimena Schlaepfer incorporates various media into her work, including drawing, weaving, ceramics, and installation. Through her practice, she explores mythology, which she sees as a prism for understanding our societies and cultural identity.
Drawing inspiration from the symbols of ancient cultures, she explores cultural identity and our connection to the living. Through works that highlight the cycles and interconnections between living beings, inert elements, the planet, and the universe, Jimena offers a poetic and thoughtful visual language.
The artist perceives our world as a "culture of cultures," where the past and present are in constant dialogue. This constant interaction fuels a quest for meaning and a reflection on what constitutes us as individuals and as a community. Drawing on the imagination and symbolism of ancient civilizations, she shapes a unique artistic language, rooted in timelessness and sensitivity.
Her work also reflects a deep fascination with nature, a universe in perpetual metamorphosis, governed by a cyclical order where forces intertwine and renew themselves endlessly. She perceives nature as a network of mysterious and symbolic interconnections, where living beings, inert elements, planets and cosmos are part of a single whole. Through her works, she seeks to reveal these invisible links that surpass us as individuals, but which, at the same time, shape and nourish us.
She has presented several solo exhibitions in Mexico, including at the Santo Domingo Cultural Center in Oaxaca (2016) and at the Museum of Painters of Oaxaca (MUPO) the same year.
Recent group exhibitions include (MUPO, Oaxaca, 2022), (Local Project, New York, 2021), (Arroniz Gallery, Mexico, 2021), (NN Gallery, Oaxaca, 2020), (Los Pinos Cultural Complex, Mexico, 2019) and (Cuarto de Máquinas Gallery, Mexico, 2017).
She has been awarded the Young Creators grant from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) twice, in 2006 and 2011. Her career includes several artistic residencies, including at Art OMI (New York, 2022), Vermont Studio Center (Vermont, 2022), Art Project (Playa del Carmen, 2021), Dedazo (Chiapas, 2019) and the Banff Centre (Canada, 2014).
His works are included in prestigious collections in the United States, including the Art OMI Collection and the Francis J. Greenburger Collection.
