Description
In "Behind the smoke", Azhar Mehmood explores the expressive possibilities of a closely framed monochrome portrait.
The figure looks directly towards the viewer. Dark eyebrows and carefully shaded eyes give the face a concentrated presence, while the mouth holds a cigarette from which smoke rises in a pale, irregular trail.
This delicate passage introduces movement across the left side of the composition. Its soft edges contrast with the more defined features, creating an interplay between clarity and concealment.
The clothing gives the portrait a structured foundation. A light collar, patterned tie and dark jacket establish intersecting shapes beneath the face. Their tonal contrasts reinforce the composition’s vertical direction.
Mehmood builds depth through gradual shifts in shading. Light along the nose and cheek meets deeper passages around the eyes and jaw, while closely placed marks give texture to the hair and fabric.
The work’s cinematic character comes from its concentrated framing and restrained palette. Without specifying a narrative, it holds a moment of stillness in which gaze, smoke and shadow carry the emotional atmosphere.

Presentation
Azhar Mehmood is a Pakistani visual artist working across hyperrealistic portraiture, pencil drawing, landscape painting and Arabic calligraphy. He began making art in childhood and has developed his practice over fourteen years.
His artistic interests centre on human expression, nature and cultural heritage. Through portraiture and drawing, he explores the descriptive possibilities of line, tone and closely observed detail. His landscapes provide a complementary space for engaging with natural forms and atmosphere.
In his Arabic calligraphy, Mehmood brings written language into dialogue with visual structure. Faith and spirituality inform this aspect of his practice, alongside an appreciation of the ornamental and compositional traditions of Islamic art.
Mehmood is also developing a body of abstract work, expanding his approach towards more intuitive expressions of emotion and responses to nature. His practice continues to evolve through the exchange between representational precision, calligraphic form and creative experimentation.
