Description
Graphite pencil drawing
In "A Crying Child", Azhar Mehmood uses the tonal subtlety of graphite to explore a fleeting, emotionally charged expression.
The child’s eyes form the principal focal point. Bright reflections contrast with dark pupils and shaded eyelids, while tears descend along both cheeks. The raised eyebrows and tension around the mouth reinforce the expression through closely observed details.
Dark, loosely curling hair surrounds the face. Beneath it, softer transitions of grey give volume to the forehead, cheeks and chin. Broader marks describe the clothing, allowing the handling of the drawing to move between delicate facial features and more expansive folds.
The open background keeps attention on the figure. A slight turn of the shoulders adds depth, while the face creates a direct emotional connection with the viewer.
The portrait reflects Mehmood’s sustained interest in human expression. Working within a monochrome palette, he builds its impact through light, contrast and the relationships between individual features.
Without specifying a narrative, invites reflection on vulnerability and the importance of looking with care.

Presentation
Azhar Mehmood is a Pakistani visual artist working across hyperrealistic portraiture, pencil drawing, landscape painting and Arabic calligraphy. He began making art in childhood and has developed his practice over fourteen years.
His artistic interests centre on human expression, nature and cultural heritage. Through portraiture and drawing, he explores the descriptive possibilities of line, tone and closely observed detail. His landscapes provide a complementary space for engaging with natural forms and atmosphere.
In his Arabic calligraphy, Mehmood brings written language into dialogue with visual structure. Faith and spirituality inform this aspect of his practice, alongside an appreciation of the ornamental and compositional traditions of Islamic art.
Mehmood is also developing a body of abstract work, expanding his approach towards more intuitive expressions of emotion and responses to nature. His practice continues to evolve through the exchange between representational precision, calligraphic form and creative experimentation.
