This painting is a reinterpretation of a relief from the ancient Borobudur temple, depicting the fauna of Indonesia from the 8th–9th centuries. The small creatures resembling koalas or mice, together with contemplative ravens, are associated by the artist with the mythological ancient Vedic deities Mitra and Varuna. Through cultural heritage, natural motifs address us in the language of eternity.
These images emerge as a pair of principles that always operate together — two sides of a single cosmic law.
Mitra is daylight, gentle, friendly, trusting, and generous.
Varuna is nocturnal, deep, responsible — a strict observer of karmic order.
Mitra creates connection.
Varuna upholds the law.
Together, they form moral and cosmic balance.
Without Mitra, law becomes cold and rigid.
Without Varuna, harmony becomes superficial and irresponsible.
Mitra and Varuna are Love and Truth.
For the artist, this work is an attempt to sense how love and the law of cosmic order can coexist on the level of nature, not as opposites, but as a single, breathing order.
