Description
Shim Moon Seup's (2018) presents a vertical interpretation of his signature visual language, where rhythm, balance, and material sensitivity converge in a refined abstract composition. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work is structured through horizontal bands of soft blue and grey tones, layered with subtle tonal transitions that generate a sense of depth and atmospheric diffusion.
Measuring 195 x 114 cm, this vertically oriented format introduces a more architectural presence, guiding the viewer's gaze along a dynamic interplay between horizontal stability and vertical flow. The delicate brushwork reveals fine gradients and veiled textures, where each passage of paint carries the trace of time and gesture. Slight variations in tone and opacity create a quiet tension within the composition, enhancing its contemplative character.
Rooted in a meditative process, Shim Moon Seup's practice reflects an ongoing exploration of repetition, perception, and material presence. The layered surface suggests both continuity and transformation, echoing the cyclical rhythms of nature. The restrained palette allows light to emerge gradually, inviting a slow and immersive viewing experience.
Presentation
SHIM Moon-Seup (b. 1943, Tongyeong, South Korea) is a central figure in contemporary Korean sculpture and a pioneer of the country’s artistic avant-garde.
His practice is rooted in a profound exploration of the relationship between matter, time, and nature, challenging the traditional boundaries of sculpture. Working with materials such as wood, stone, iron, and earth, the artist investigates processes of transformation, balance, and impermanence, often inspired by the maritime landscape of his hometown.
Since the 1960s, SHIM Moon-Seup has played a fundamental role in redefining sculpture, incorporating experimental approaches that engage in dialogue with Minimalism and movements such as Mono-ha, while maintaining a deep connection to Korean philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.
His work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Hakone Open-Air Museum, among others.
