Moon-Seup Shim

Shim Moon Seup's (2018) exemplifies the artist's mastery of restraint, where minimal means generate a profound visual and perceptual experience. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work unfolds through horizontal bands of soft blue and grey tones, delicately layered to create a luminous and immersive surface.

Measuring 114 x 195 cm, the horizontal format reinforces a sense of continuity and calm, evoking the distant horizon and the quiet rhythm of the sea. A central, deeper blue band anchors the composition, establishing a subtle structural axis while allowing surrounding tonal fields to breathe and expand. The transitions between layers are fluid and almost imperceptible, creating a surface that appears to dissolve and reform over time.

Fine vertical traces emerge within the horizontal structure, introducing a gentle tension between stillness and movement. These delicate variations suggest the accumulation of gestures, where each layer retains the memory of the previous one. Light does not come from contrast, but from within the painting itself, gradually revealing depth and atmosphere.

Rooted in a contemplative process, Shim Moon Seup's work reflects an ongoing dialogue between time, material, and perception. invites a slow and attentive viewing, offering a space of quiet reflection and sensory immersion.
