Moon-Seup Shim

Shim Moon Seup's (2018) reveals a more fluid and atmospheric interpretation of his signature visual language, where repetition, rhythm, and materiality converge in a restrained abstract composition. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work is composed of layered horizontal bands in deep grey and muted blue tones, subtly modulated to create a luminous and immersive surface.

Measuring 162 x 114 cm, the vertical format enhances the interplay between horizontal continuity and vertical movement. Unlike more structured compositions within the series, this work presents a softer, more diffused transition between layers, where the boundaries dissolve into one another. Fine linear traces and delicate striations run across the surface, suggesting motion and temporality, while also evoking the quiet persistence of natural rhythms.

The tonal shifts are minimal yet precise, allowing light to emerge from within the painting rather than from external contrast. This creates a sense of depth that is both visual and perceptual, inviting the viewer into a contemplative engagement with the work.

Rooted in a meditative process, Shim Moon Seup's practice reflects an ongoing dialogue between control and release, structure and fluidity. In , the surface becomes a record of time and gesture, offering a space where stillness and movement coexist.
