Description
(2024) is a large-scale charcoal and acrylic painting on canvas by Brazilian contemporary artist Ritchelly Oliveira.
A solitary figure occupies the center of the composition, surrounded by an abundant garden of flowers. Executed predominantly in grayscale, the work combines detailed portraiture with a dense botanical environment that extends across almost the entire canvas.
The composition relates closely to Oliveira's ongoing exploration of human fragility. His practice uses the human figure to address affective relationships, love, vulnerability and emotional experiences, examining how these experiences continue to shape the individual.
Through its title, (“Garden of Fragilities"), the painting brings the botanical setting into dialogue with the emotional concerns that characterize the artist's wider practice.
Presentation
Ritchelly Oliveira, visual artist, began his work in 2012, shortly after enrolling in visual arts at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), he found in the human figure a space to present his speech about what he understands most profoundly present in affective relationships. He talks about what he suspects to be love and, believing it to be a universal feeling. It proposes what is common to men, even knowing that this love brings something that is also individual and particular.
Believing that affective relationships are built from the individual and how their surroundings interfere with them, we try to rescue here the possibility of constructing discourses about love, especially black love. The importance of reflecting together on issues such as sexuality, emotional responsibility and colorism are necessary canons in this invitation to embrace the dangerous and exclusionary ideals of romantic love that circulate in our environments.
